“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” brought in $69 million from 4,284 theaters in the United States and Canada over the weekend, raising its domestic total to $308.1 million and its worldwide gross to $629 million, according to studio estimates.
The animated sequel fell 48% from its opening weekend, a relatively modest drop for a major blockbuster.
The film is still trailing the pace of the original “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which had already passed $353 million domestically by its second weekend in 2023 and outperformed the sequel despite mixed reviews for the follow-up.
Still, industry analysts said the latest installment remains a major success, especially against its reported $110 million production budget.
Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore called the showing “very respectable,” saying the film’s quick climb past $300 million domestically was “astonishing,” particularly because many ticket buyers were families, who often purchase lower-priced tickets.
The film’s performance also helped sustain box office momentum ahead of the summer movie season.
Elsewhere, Universal’s romantic comedy “You, Me & Tuscany,” starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, opened in fourth place with $8 million from 3,151 screens. The film had a reported $18 million budget and drew an audience that was 80% female.
