Ghana to Grant Free Visas to All Africans Starting May 25

President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will introduce a free visa regime for all African nationals beginning May 25, 2026, marking Africa Day.

Under the new policy, Africans traveling to Ghana will be able to obtain e-visas online at no cost.

Mahama made the announcement during bilateral talks with Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is on a state visit to Ghana. He said systems have been put in place to screen prospective visitors and ensure national security is not compromised.

“As the cradle of Pan-Africanism, Ghana believes it has a historic responsibility to remain open to Africans from across the continent,” Mahama said.

The visa-free initiative forms part of a broader e-visa policy set to launch next month. The government expects the reform to boost tourism and strengthen intra-African trade.

Mahama also said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue efforts to secure additional visa waiver agreements for Ghanaian passport holders, noting that 23 such agreements have been negotiated since last year.
