Ghana, Colombia Sign Maritime Deal Linking Tema and Cartagena Ports

Ghana and Colombia have signed an agreement to establish direct maritime connectivity between the Port of Tema and the Port of Cartagena, a move officials say will strengthen trade links between Africa and Latin America.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the deal after it was signed in Bogotá on Monday following negotiations between both countries.

The agreement is expected to streamline shipping routes, improve logistics and create new opportunities for businesses operating across the Atlantic.

Officials from both sides emphasized the broader significance of the initiative, describing it as a shift in how the Atlantic corridor is used. Once associated with the transatlantic slave trade, the route is now being repositioned to support economic cooperation, job creation and shared prosperity.

The new maritime link is also expected to deepen bilateral relations between Ghana and Colombia, while expanding trade and investment opportunities between Africa and Latin America.
