Zimbabwe Applies for BRICS Membership, Awaits Decision

Zimbabwe has officially applied to join BRICS and is awaiting a response, Foreign Minister Amon Murwira announced Thursday during a visit to Moscow.

Speaking at a news conference alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Murwira reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to meeting the bloc’s membership requirements.

“BRICS is one of the most important platforms for economic cooperation based on principles of mutual respect and sovereign equality,” Murwira said. “Zimbabwe would benefit from any system that upholds these key principles, and BRICS is one of them.”

He confirmed that Zimbabwe is aligning with BRICS’ conditions and awaiting a decision based on internal consensus within the group.

The BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has been expanding its influence, with multiple nations expressing interest in joining. Zimbabwe’s bid underscores its strategic goal of strengthening economic ties and global partnerships within the alliance.
