Will Smith Returns to Music With Deeply Personal Album

Will Smith is making his return to music with his most introspective album yet. The actor and rapper, known for his chart-topping hits and blockbuster films, is set to release Based on a True Story, his first studio album in nearly 20 years.

The project, which features collaborations with Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Jaden Smith, is a reflection of the personal and professional challenges Smith has faced in recent years.

“It really is the result of my initial self-examination,” Smith said. “Every song is about some part of myself that I discovered or wanted to explore, something I wanted to share. It’s the most full musical offering that I’ve ever created.”

The album blends gospel influences with soul-searching lyrics. One track in particular stands out to Smith. “‘I got the keys to heaven. But I earn them things in hell. I’ll give my life for something, but my soul just ain’t for sale,’” he recited from a song featuring J Cross. “That concept really stuck with me. The keys to heaven are earned in hell. When you’re going through something hard, it’s not because you’re bad or did something wrong—it’s just part of life.”

Smith has endured public and personal struggles, particularly after the 2022 Academy Awards incident that disrupted his career. Instead of retreating, he turned to music as a form of self-expression.

His reflections extend beyond music. Smith recalled seeking guidance from actor Denzel Washington during a difficult period in his 40s. “I was like, ‘D, I’m having a hard time over here, brother.’ And he said, ‘Man, listen, it’s called the Funky 40s. Everybody has a hard time in their 40s. Don’t worry about it. Then you’ll get to the f*** it 50s.’”

Smith also credits inspiration from Tibetan Buddhist Pema Chödrön and historical figures like Nelson Mandela for helping him navigate adversity.

“There’s a certain psychological and emotional fortitude that you cultivate from leaning into difficulty, not trying to run away,” he said. “I’ve come to some really beautiful answers for myself—my perception of God and reality.”

As he prepares for Based on a True Story, Smith is also launching his first-ever headline tour, beginning in June at the Mawazine festival in Morocco and ending in Paris in September. The tour will reflect different phases of his life and career, blending nostalgia with new artistic direction.

Beyond music, Smith has several film projects in pre-production, including Fast and Loose, Hancock 2, I Am Legend 2, and a remake of Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Still, he remains focused on his creative resurgence.

“This is about to be the greatest creative run of my entire career,” Smith said. “The things that I’m about to do in music and cinema—it’s like, I can’t sleep at night. I’m so ready to go.”
