Uber Technologies Inc. has expanded its services in Kenya with the launch of Uber Safari, offering visitors and business travelers a unique way to experience wildlife adventures inside the iconic Nairobi National Park — the only wildlife park located within a capital city.
The ride-hailing company, which is celebrating a decade of operations in East Africa, is targeting part of Kenya’s $4.3 billion tourism industry by making short safaris more accessible, especially for travelers with limited time in Nairobi.
Through the Uber app, users can now pre-book three-hour guided tours to spot some of Africa’s most famous animals, including lions, rhinos, buffaloes, and leopards. Day trips are priced at 25,000 Kenyan shillings ($194), while night tours cost 40,000 shillings ($310).
“By opening the platform to local tour operators and fleet partners, Uber Safari creates new earning opportunities for those who already have vehicles and expertise in guiding safaris,” Uber said in a statement.
Tourism remains one of Kenya’s most vital industries, contributing 10.4% of the nation’s GDP and accounting for 5.5% of formal employment. Uber highlighted its growing role in the sector, noting that in 2023, its platform contributed 14.1 billion shillings to the Kenyan economy — with one-fifth of that impact coming directly from tourism-related services.
With this latest addition, Uber aims to blend technology and tourism, making it easier for both locals and international visitors to enjoy Nairobi’s natural treasures without leaving the city.
