A packed Gaborone Stadium witnessed a standout performance Saturday from local sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo, who claimed victory in the men’s 200 meters at the FNB Golden Prix.
After missing the 2024 edition of the event, Tebogo returned to top form, clocking 20.23 seconds to the delight of thousands of fans.
“This is our catch-up season, but I’m on the podium now,” Tebogo said. “The goal was to finish first and perform well, just like we did in the 2023 championships.”
In the women’s competition, 17-year-old Hanna Hope Vermaak of South Africa edged out compatriot Viwe Jingqi to win the 100 meters in 11.44 seconds. Egypt’s Basant Hemida made headlines in the 400 meters, setting a meet record of 50.77 seconds.
“I’m thrilled,” Hemida said. “This isn’t my usual event, but I’m happy to win the 400 meters after a long break and a very competitive race.”
South African Akani Simbine added another highlight to the event, capturing the men’s 100-meter title with a win over Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala.
“This result comes after years of preparation and sacrifice,” Simbine said. “It’s about doing better each year, and I’m proud to return as a world champion.”
Tebogo’s victory and Botswana’s strong showing came as the nation prepares to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
“I believe Botswana is ready,” Tebogo said. “With the support of the government and the incredible people here, we’re prepared for 2025.”
The FNB Golden Prix continues to grow as a key fixture on the African athletics calendar and a vital lead-up to next year’s global competition.
