Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris dissolved the country’s caretaker government on Sunday, just one day after being sworn in as the first civilian head of government since a military coup four years ago, state news agency SUNA reported.
In his first public address, Idris vowed to “serve the nation and the Sudanese people with the utmost sincerity and dedication,” and called on countries supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end what he called their “criminal operations.”
Idris did not announce when a new government would be formed.
Sudan has been gripped by civil war since April 2023, when a power struggle between the Sudanese military and the RSF erupted into full-scale conflict in Khartoum and other regions. The war has devastated the country, with more than 24,000 people reported killed and over 14 million displaced, including 4 million who have fled to neighbouring countries.
The United Nations and human rights organizations have documented atrocities committed during the conflict, including mass rape and ethnically targeted killings in Darfur, which they say amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Famine has been declared in at least five regions, with the worst conditions centred in Darfur, a region already devastated by decades of violence and neglect.
