Rwanda to Launch Africa’s First Self-Flying Air Taxi

Rwanda is set to make aviation history by introducing Africa’s first self-flying electric air taxi during the Aviation Africa 2025 summit in Kigali on September 4–5.

The initiative is a partnership between the Government of Rwanda, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), and EHang, a global leader in urban air mobility technology. The demonstration will feature EHang’s EH216-S, an autonomous electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Officials say the flight will not only showcase cutting-edge aviation technology but also position Rwanda as a hub for advanced air mobility on the continent. The project is expected to provide sustainable solutions for traffic congestion, transportation, and logistics.

“This historic flight is about more than technology; it’s about building a future where cities are better connected, economies are more dynamic, and transport is safer and greener,” said Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure.

CRBC Director General Huang Qilin emphasized the collaboration’s potential to bring innovative low-altitude transport models to Africa. “Our partnership with Rwanda reflects a shared vision of pioneering in aviation technology and creating new opportunities for development across the continent,” he said.

By hosting this landmark demonstration, Rwanda hopes to attract global investment and inspire the growth of air mobility services across Africa.
