Preparations are in full swing for the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, scheduled to take place in Kigali from September 21–28, marking the first time the global cycling event will be hosted in Africa.
At a press conference held at Amahoro Stadium, key officials, including Minister of Sports Mukazayire Nelly, Kigali City Mayor Dusengiyumva Samuel, Rwanda National Police Spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga, FERWACY President Ndayishimiye Samson, and Rwanda Development Board (RDB) Tourism Director General Irène Murerwa, shared updates on the preparations and expectations for the championship.

Sports Minister Mukazayire Nelly announced that 110 countries have confirmed participation. She highlighted new milestones, including the introduction of a women’s under-23 category and the first-ever indoor start for the Individual Time Trial (ITT) at BK Arena.
“This is the first time we are hosting an event of this magnitude in Rwanda, and we have done everything possible to ensure both visitors and Kigali residents enjoy the experience,” she said. “Kigali is safe, but now it will also be full of excitement. Come and let’s celebrate together.”
Security and Infrastructure Readiness
Police Spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga emphasized Rwanda’s commitment to safety, noting that hosting such a global event reflects the country’s growing reputation as a hub for sports and international conferences.
“Preparing for this competition required collaboration across government institutions,” he said. “We worked with the Ministry of Infrastructure to identify race routes, with the City of Kigali, and with the Ministry of Health to ensure that all 918 athletes receive proper care.

A Boost for Kigali’s Economy and Tourism
Mayor Dusengiyumva Samuel encouraged residents to see the event as an opportunity rather than a disruption.
“This is not a lockdown. Apart from the race routes, life will continue as usual,” he said. “Even if the cyclists pass by your home, gather your neighbors and create a fan zone. We urge hoteliers, bar owners, and traders to seize this moment. Hotels and restaurants have been upgraded—it is not a time to close, it is a time to work.”

RDB’s Tourism Director General, Irène Murerwa, noted that 33 hotels are already fully booked for the championship.
“This is an excellent opportunity to showcase Rwanda, highlight our attractions, and demonstrate our culture of hospitality,” she said. “We are also monitoring closely to ensure there will be no price hikes for goods and services during the championship.”

Spotlight on Team Rwanda and International Stars
FERWACY President Ndayishimiye Samson confirmed that Team Rwanda is fully prepared to compete.
“Every cyclist is in good shape and working closely with their coaches. In cycling, everyone wants to win,” he said, noting the excitement surrounding both the Rwandan riders and international stars such as reigning world champion Tadej Pogačar.
With the countdown now underway, Kigali is set to welcome the world for a historic week of competition, celebration, and international sporting spirit.
