Kerry Washington Makes Action Debut in ‘Shadow Force,’ Credits Husband for Support

Kerry Washington is stepping into action-hero territory with her latest film, Shadow Force, marking her first leading role in the genre.

The Emmy-winning actor said her husband, former NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha, played a key role in helping her prepare physically and mentally for the intense training required for the role.

“My husband’s always really great because he’s a former professional athlete,” Washington said in an interview. “He has great tips on self-care — staying hydrated, getting enough rest — and he really understands the athlete’s mindset. That encouragement made a big difference, especially with the long hours of weight training, weapons training and fight choreography.”

Washington also served as a producer on the film, which co-stars Omar Sy. Shadow Force is set to be released in theaters on May 9.

The film’s release comes just weeks after the debut of G20, another action thriller led by a Black woman, Viola Davis. Washington said she and Davis remain in touch.

“I emailed her to congratulate her on the success of her film,” Washington said. “She’s incredible and totally badass in it.”

Washington also recalled reaching out to Davis for advice when offered a role in Animals, a project directed by Ben Affleck.

“When Ben called me, I reached out to Viola and asked what her experience was like working with him. She had nothing but glowing things to say,” Washington said.
