Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage will take center stage this June as the historic University of Ibadan Arts Theatre hosts the premiere of Iyalode Ibadan, a stage production celebrating Yoruba tradition and storytelling. The play is scheduled for June 22, 2025.
Produced by Ayo Adams in partnership with cultural group Egbe Atelewo and directed by Waheed Olamilekan Orolabi, Iyalode Ibadan promises to be more than a theatrical performance. It is a cultural revival, blending tradition with innovation to retell an epic tale from Ibadan’s past.
Set against the backdrop of old Ibadan’s sociopolitical landscape, the play explores themes of leadership, gender roles, and identity through the eyes of an Iyalode — a powerful and respected woman in Yoruba society. The narrative aims to provoke thoughtful engagement with history while highlighting the enduring influence of indigenous leadership structures.

The production brings together an impressive cast and crew of both seasoned professionals and rising talents in acting, music, costume, and stage design. It fuses traditional Yoruba aesthetics with modern theatre techniques to create a visually rich and emotionally resonant experience.
Rehearsals are in full swing, supported by language experts and cultural custodians to ensure authenticity and accessibility. According to the producers, the project reflects a broader push within Ibadan’s creative community to foster culturally conscious storytelling that speaks to both young and old.
“Iyalode Ibadan is not just about entertainment,” the production team shared. “It’s about honoring our heritage and reigniting public interest in Yoruba history through the power of performance.”
The event marks a key moment in the city’s artistic calendar and reaffirms Ibadan’s place as a hub for indigenous storytelling and cultural pride.
