Ghana Moderators Sue Meta Over Psychological Harm From Reviewing Extreme Content

Content moderators in Ghana are suing Meta Platforms Inc., claiming they suffered psychological harm from reviewing graphic and disturbing material posted on the company’s social media platforms.

The moderators, employed by Majorel, an Accra-based subcontractor hired by Meta, allege they developed depression, anxiety, insomnia and substance abuse problems as a result of their work. They also contend that mental health support provided by their employer was inadequate and that repeated requests for help were ignored.

Majorel is owned by Teleperformance, which has disputed the allegations.

The lawsuit follows similar claims by more than 100 Facebook content moderators in Kenya, who were diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder linked to their exposure to harmful content.

Social media companies, including Meta, employ moderators to remove content that violates community standards and to help train automated systems to detect and delete such material.
