African Nations Make Strides at Special Olympics Winter Games

The Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin conclude Saturday after a week of competition and celebration, featuring final medal events and closing ceremonies in Sestriere and Turin.

African nations made a strong impression at this year’s Games. Senegal made its debut with an eight-athlete team, while South Africa fielded six competitors in figure skating and short-track speed skating. Namibia’s floorball team also showcased significant progress on the world stage.

Beyond Africa, Jamaica also made history. Special Olympics Jamaica’s Nigel Davies expressed pride in their athletes’ journey to the podium.

“They learned to roller-skate first, then moved to inline rollerblades. That’s how they transitioned to ice skating,” Davies said. “I’m proud to see them go out, do their best, and win gold, silver, and bronze.”

As the Games close, the achievements of athletes from Africa and beyond highlight their growing presence in winter sports.
